Solar Panel Cleaning That Starts With an Inspection, Not a Hose

Our solar cleaning crew has cleaned hundreds of panels across Placer County, and every job starts the same way: we review all the solar panels first to make sure there aren't any that are broken or cracked. If we find one, we address it with the homeowner before we start any work. No surprises on the roof. No surprises on the invoice.

Why it matters

Dirty panels are quietly cutting your power production

Photovoltaic panels only produce at full strength when sunlight reaches the cells. Soiling gets in the way: dust, pollen, bird droppings, tree sap, algae and moss near shaded eaves, and the fine haze of air pollution that settles over the valley. Around here the soiling rate climbs all summer because it simply does not rain, and your system output slides a little further each dry week.

Months of dry-season dust on a rooftop array. This film is what a cleaning removes.

How much? NREL field data puts soiling-related performance loss as high as 21% on residential arrays in dry climates. Your inverter reports the shortfall every day; most homeowners never open the app to see it. To put a dollar figure on your own roof, run the solar panel ROI calculator. Thirty seconds. Real numbers.

Winter rain does not fix it either; it dries into hard water spots and mineral deposits, trading one film for another.

How we do it

How our solar cleaning crew does it

There is one right way to clean a solar array: the method panel manufacturers describe in their care guidelines.

  1. Inspect every panel. Cracks, chips, failed seals, anything a cleaning could make worse. We flag issues with you before work begins.
  2. Wash with deionized water and a soft brush. Our purified water system strips the minerals out of the water, so it dries without spots. The water-fed pole and soft brush lift grime off the glass without scratching it.
  3. Spot-free rinse. Pure water needs no squeegee and no microfiber buff. It sheets off clean. Think of it as soft washing, but for glass.
  4. Streak check before we leave. We make sure there's no streaks before we leave. That is our satisfaction guarantee, and we hold to it on every job.

No harsh chemicals. No mild detergent, even; soap leaves residue that attracts dust faster. And never high-pressure spraying. We are a pressure washing company, and we will not put a pressure washer anywhere near your panels. Pressure washing and abrasive brushes are how panel coatings get ruined and warranty claims get denied.

Any array

Roof-mounted, ground-mounted, steep, two-story: we clean it

Residential solar panel cleaning is our core work, and roof-mounted panels are where most companies get sketchy, because roof access is the hard part. Our safety-first process covers fall protection and ladder safety on every job, whatever the roof pitch. Tile roof, composition shingles, metal roof, skylights, a two-story roof with a PV system split across three faces: our solar cleaning crew handles all of it. Ground-mounted panels get the same deionized wash and usually land right at the minimum.

Straight answers

What we don't do (and why that protects you)

Some solar panel cleaners will sell you whatever you ask for. We would rather be straight with you:

  • We don't install bird proofing or critter guard. If our inspection turns up nesting or debris under your panels, we tell you, and you bring in a specialist.
  • We don't run a maintenance plan yet. Cleaning once or twice a year is right for most homes; we send free service reminders when your roof is due.
  • We don't touch the electrical. Your inverter and microinverter stay untouched; there is no need to turn off the solar panel system for an exterior wash.

Everything we do stays inside manufacturer guidelines, which keeps your warranty intact.

Common questions

Solar panel cleaning FAQs

How often should solar panels be cleaned?
Once or twice a year for most homes. Seasonality matters: a late-spring wash clears winter grime and pollen before peak production, and homes near fields or construction benefit from a fall visit. Heavy shading or low roof pitch can mean more frequent cleaning.
When is the best time to clean solar panels?
Late spring through summer. Long, bright days mean every percent of energy efficiency you recover is worth more kilowatt-hours. That is why summer cleaning pays best; the same film costs you far less in December.
What are the safest methods for cleaning solar panels?
Deionized water, a soft brush, and a spot-free rinse. That is the method manufacturers endorse. Skip garden-hose water (mineral deposits), skip soap, and never use a pressure washer or abrasive pads on solar glass.
Is DIY solar panel cleaning worth it?
For ground-mounted panels within reach, tips for cleaning solar panels yourself are simple: cool glass, pure water, soft brush. On a roof, the math flips. Falls, cracked tiles, and voided warranties cost more than the $200 you saved, which is why most homeowners hire someone to clean solar panels.
Do you take before-and-after photos?
Ask and we will happily document your job; cleaned glass photographs dramatically next to a dirty panel.
